Does Transnational Repression Explain the Poor Turnout at Cambodian Grenade Attack Trial in Paris?
Very few French-Cambodians attended last month’s trial of two bodyguards of ex-PM Hun Sen. It’s probably no coincidence.

The French government has shown a consistent lack of interest in the issue of transnational repression carried out by authoritarian regimes such as China and Cambodia which aim to intimidate their diasporas into silence.
Diasporas don’t really fit into anyone’s political agenda. They are often a nuisance for their countries of origin, though also a source of remittances and skills. They are often simply overlooked by mainstream political parties in their host countries.
The result is that the basic workings of democracy are undermined.
